Canadian
Standard
Eight Tourer
On your website, you asked for
pictures of other post-war Standard cars. Here are two pictures
of a 1948 Standard convertible that I bought in 1955 as my first
car. Sorry the pictures are poor quality but they were scanned
from old photographs that were fuzzy
.
Ray's car
when he purchased it in 1955
When I bought this car, it had
spent the winter in a place where they had been selling
Christmas trees in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The side curtains
were behind the rear seat and all windows had broken
frames., so the car was full of Christmas tree needles. Only
one wheel of the mechanical brakes was working and the grey
paint was peeling. The battery was completely dead but the car
started easily with the crank. The purchase price was $70
Canadian.
I had a part time job in an
automotive body shop at that time so I was able to do the
mechanical repairs and to have the car painted for the cost of
the paint. We painted it a light yellow colour, using paint
that was left over from painting a Singer.
I've only seen one other car like
this in Canada so I have often regretted selling my Standard. A
few years after I sold it, I saw it in a yard with several other
'collector cars' so I suspect it still exists somewhere. If you
have any information about any similar Standards in Canada, I
would be interested in hearing from you.
