Feature
on an SS II Tourer

1934
SSII Tourer in the crowded Auction Room
This SS II Tourer is
the first to be featured on this website
The SS II was a product
of Swallow Sidecars who had been producing cars in Blackpool from
1922. The cars were initially built on a selection of chassis bought
in from Austin, Morris, Swift, Fiat, Wolsley and of course, Standard.
The original Series I
SS II of 1931 used the Standard Little Nine chassis
This Series II SS II comprises a lightly modified 1934 Standard
10Hp chassis, clothed in new Tourer bodywork -
created by William Lyons.
The only differences
that I can spot on the chassis, compared to the version used in the
Standard Saloon, are a couple of additions:
apart from that that,
the mechanical components are all pure Standard.
The attractive two
door Tourer bodywork is finished in light grey with black fabric
hood. The interior is finished in red leather and the car has a rear
mounted Spare. This car is described as having had a replacement
12Hp Standard Engine in 1961.
Offered in Auction by
H&H Classics at Buxton on 26th November, Lot 17 was presented in
what appeared to be almost perfect condition, and with a new MoT. It
reached a high offer of £17,500 (plus commission and VAT) As that was slightly below the
reserve, the seller was contacted, but the car appears to have been
sold after the auction. The final inclusive price shown on the
H&H website is £22,000.
A good price for an exceptionally
rare and desirable car, how many others have YOU seen? There is no
doubt in my mind that such a car will appreciate in the future
