Big
9 tackles a big test in Cyprus in 1933

Geros
Demades looks pleased that his car has climbed the highest
mountain road in Cyprus
"I am enclosing an early thirties photo of my late father D.J.Demades standing
contented next to a Standard 10.The complacent look of " Geros " emanates
from the fact that he and his car are photographed at the top of the highest
mountain of Cyprus, The Troodos range. At the time. the very 54 mile trip from Nicosia to Troodos via the narrow twisted
uphill road was considered to be by itself a great accomplishment.
If the same trip was carried out in the summer, at one go, and the car would not boil, then it was
more than a distinction; it was passing the acid test with
honours. The Standards passed the test consistenly. The tip of
Troodos mountain is a part of an old ( 20 million ) ocean crust which
through complex geological process was thrust to its present height of 2000
meters.
Kindest regards to you and Lynda.
Glafkos."
Hi Glafkos,
Many thanks for the picture and
the story. The Standard is, in fact, a Big 9 so it must have been about 1933.
Keep sending us the stories of Standards in Cyprus.
Kind regards,
Phil
I am aware that there are other cars
and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you
have material and photographs, please let me know. Please send me, Phil Homer, a
