My Standard and Triumph Cars.

Robert Browett writes from Warwickshire.

My association with Standard Triumph vehicles goes back a very long way as my family were Standard distributors in Leicester since 1931.

I first drove my 1924 Standard Kenilworth in a Standard Register Rally in 1964 and it has been a regular attender of Standard Motor Club events ever since. I love driving the car in summer conditions but road traffic levels these days make it impractical to travel to many events as the car cruises at only 35mph.

Having worked for Triumph in the USA in the 60’s I was delighted I was able to buy a 1967 Triumph TR4A from a fellow member of the Standard Motor Club in 2012. This lovely car has been my means of transport to the many Club events and other classic car meetings that are held outside of my immediate area around Stratford upon Avon.

The TR4A is a removable hard top model that retains the back window when in open top form. A small ‘Surrey top’ is used when necessary to keep out the weather. The 2.1 litre 4-cylinder engine provides adequate power for sporty performance that allows the car to easily keep up with modern traffic.

My Triumph has therefore given me the ideal companion to my vintage Standard and I love driving them both!
