Recent new Member Chris Walkington has made extensive use of the Standard Motor Club’s WebShop in order to get his car back on the road:
Here is his story:
I purchased a Standard 4/8A at auction which looked beautiful but was a non-runner.
As they say, beauty is only skin deep and the car was not in a roadworthy condition.
The first task was to get it running properly. So with new coil, club beautifully reconditioned carb and new Club distributor, cylinder head spark plug threads repaired with inserts.
I discovered the sump was leaking from a previous repair on the pan, which has been repaired and is now oil tight.
The engine timing chain was rattling a bit so installed a new chain and tensioner.
The steering wandered a little bit but and was down to badly worn track rod ends these have been replaced.
The brakes were in very poor condition oil / grease soaked and cables had virtually no movement. At present I’m now restoring the braking system with brake drums skimmed on lathe and outers painted, back plates cleaned and painted, new seals and club supplied brake linings.
The club managed to find me a set of used brake cables that were in good condition as the ones on the car were all frayed. I managed to get hold of a nice, maintenance poster and are currently getting period accessories for the tool tray under the spare wheel.
I want to give a big thanks to Phil, Linda and Brian for their help with spares and advice as without the club it wouldn’t have been possible to get the car roadworthy. My intention is to run it around until winter and then give the engine, gearbox and back axle a full refurb.
