| The Standard Flying V-Eight Page

Dear
Phil
Browsing
the website I came across the piece on the V-EIGHT and
thought you would be interested in the enclosed photo that I took
at the 1970 Lost Causes Rally at Beaulieu.
I
think I’ve read somewhere that that particular example, CAA 917,
is now in the US. It is listed in J.R.Davy’s book with one more
V8 saloon.

Thanks
Bo, here is the rest of the feature on the V8 that I first
published in 2001:

The only surviving Standard
Flying V-Eight Saloon in the UK?
The Flying 20 V-Eight was announced for
the Motor Show in October 1936. It topped the range at £349 as a Saloon or £359 in
Coupe Form. A Radio was a £13 extra. For comparison, the six cylinder 20Hp Saloon was
just £299 and offered a roomier body. The V-Eight offered 75 bhp and a top speed of
82mph, 0-50mph was quoted as 12 seconds and fuel consumption as 20mpg. By far the
fastest Standard at the time, though outperfiormed by even mundane 1600cc saloons today.
The price was reduced to £325 in the following season but even so, it was not a fast
seller. Around 350 are thought to have found homes. The model was quietly dropped in the
following year. Can you find one now?
Engine Specification:
63.5mm bore x 106mm stroke. Side
Valves. Capacity 2,686cc. Eight cylinders in 90degree vee configuration. Compression
Ration 6.5:1 RAC rating 20Hp. Tax £15 Three bearing crank.
The following are extracts from the
brochure for the car:
I am aware that there
are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more
comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know. Please
