Flying12 Restoration in Wales

1938 Standard Flying12 Saloon Restoration

Dennis and Shelia Brown from Raglan in South Wales are the proud owners of this 1938 Standard Flying 12 Saloon. No strangers to Standard motoring, they have restored a Flying Nine and a Selby beforehand, so now have three Standards to choose from.

This 1938 model has been subject to a lengthy ground up restoration over the last several years but is now in regular use to attend rallies and events.  Although its registered in 1938, this is one of a number of prototypes that were built carrying what became the 1939 model year body. The differences are mainly at the rear, where there is a notched back and opening boot lid, clearly seen in a photograph below. Dennis will admit to some problems with overheating following the rebuild  but this seems to have been resolved following two rebuilds of the waterpump. The car is now in regular use.

The smaller photos are extracts from Dennis's photo album, taken during the restoration and show the thoroughness of the work. As usual you can click on any of them to see a larger version:

The dashboard on its holidays, its on a beach towel! (Dennis, the instrument cluster is 90 deg. out!)

This is the rear view I mentioned, of what is the 1939 rear end:
