Club Stands at Caerwys.
The small village of Caerwys in the heart of Flintshire is noted for its stunning church and village charm. However, in addition to this the village also hosts not one, not two, but three fantastic shows that bring together a large collection of classic cars. The season starts with the Caerwys Agricultural Show followed by the Vale Vintage Machinery Show and then finishes with the well known Caerwys Classic Car Show organised by Clwyd Practical Classics.
This year, members of the North Wales and Cheshire Group attended all three shows however the group organised club stands at two of them which brought together a range of Standards, Triumphs and our valuable “hangers on”. Members travelled from Chester, Manchester, the Wirral, north and mid Wales to be part of the events.
Caerwys Agricultural Show
The agricultural show in June has something for everyone as it represents a true country show featuring livestock, stalls, fun fair, farming displays, vintage agricultural equipment/machinery and classic cars. This year the North Wales & Cheshire Group fielded 25 cars which included six Standards, eight Triumphs and an ultra rare 1930s Morgan with a Standard OHV engine – specially manufactured by Standard for Morgan and fitted as standard (no pun intended)
Standards included Little 9, Flying 8 DHC, Twenty V8, Twelve DHC, Fourteen and the lovely “new to the group” Vanguard P1 of Andy Flynn. In addition there were Triumphs Roadster, Spitfire, 1500 and two Stags. Also attending we had the “hangers on” representing Austin, Morris MG, Rover, Wolseley and other marques which as a whole brought onto the stand many visitors including two visitors who had a Standard each in the garage at home. Both cars (and their owners) we hope to see again soon.
Clwyd Practical Classics Classic Car Show
Following the Vale Vintage Machinery show in late June is the well known Caerwys Classic Car Show organised by local car club, Clwyd Practical Classics.
This show has now been an annual event for over twenty years and pulls in vintage and classic cars from all over the north west of England plus north and mid Wales. Once again this year over 600 cars came together in the warm summer sun at Barlows Caravan park with views across the stunning local countryside.
For over ten years the North Wales & Cheshire Group have put on a club stand and this year saw us field over thirty cars. Standards included Big Nine, Little Nine, two Vanguard P1, Vanguard P3, Fourteen, Flying Eight DHC and a 1930s Morgan (with Standard Nine engine). The stunning Vanguard P1 of David Bishop and the lovely Vanguard P3 of Phil Barratt made the journey from Manchester (and back) without a hitch. Triumphs included two stags and a 1500 plus a very, very nice Bond Equipe of Gordon Davies (the ultimate Triumph Herald in a party dress!). As ever we also welcome a large contingent of “hangers on” bringing along cars from a range of marques which resulted in quite an impressive display.
By the close of the day the event had raised over £9500 for the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Thank you to everyone who turned out with their cars and supported both of these excellent shows raising the profile of Standard motor cars in the glorious Welsh sunshine. Look out for the dates next year and come and join us.
