The 2024 NEC Classic Motor Show is not only special for the Standard Motor Club, celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of its founding in 1974, but also for the Show Organisers, celebrating the Fortieth Anniversary of the first National Classic Motor Show held over the three days of the May Bank Holiday 1984.

The event is doubly special for the Club as we had a Stand there in 1984 and a presence at every Show since, as far as I’m aware.

As usual in recent years we have a four car display with pictures as follows:-

A 1934 Standard Ten DeLuxe which dates back to the earliest days of the Club.

(The current owner recalls his late father having a copy of Club magazine issue 1), but is also celebrating its own Ninetieth Anniversary after travelling over 350,000 miles in the ownership of three generations of the same family (originally the current owner’s grandfather) and remaining in largely original condition throughout that time. This car replaces the originally advertised 1930 Standard Big Nine which regrettably is now unavailable but represents a fine substitute in well patinated rather than concours condition, bearing the evidence of its ninety year life with pride.

A 1937 Standard Flying 20 V8 which also dates back to the earliest days of the Club under the ownership of Digby Lovell who will be at the Show on Friday 8th November along with its current owner Graham Hart from Warrington who will be there all three days.

These two cars are to celebrate the Club’s Fiftieth Anniversary as they both date back to the earliest days of the Club.

A 1951 Vanguard Phase 1 Saloon which belongs to David Shadbolt

A 1952 Vanguard Phase1A Estate Car belonging to Club Chairman Peter Lockley which has been a stalwart over many years in bringing in all the Stand materials, this year assisted by the Phase 1A saloon.

These two cars are to celebrate the Fortieth Anniversary of the NEC Show as it will be seen from the attached Archive photo from the July-August 1984 issue of the Standard Car Review that an identical Phase 1A Estate Car LXK 459 and a Vanguard Phase 1A saloon ,the formerly well known NAL 435 which belonged to the late Brian Shakespeare, were on display at the 1984 Show in a recreation of the 1948 Motor Show.

Sadly LXK 459 has disappeared from the DVLA database and NAL 435 is not on the road.

That is also the case with three of the four cars in the main Club display in 1984, with the two Flyers untaxed in this century, the Vanguard on SORN and only the 1935 Ten ANP181 still taxed.

All the cars feature in a short Review Article by Lynda and Phil Homer attached, suggesting the £2.50 entrance fee put people off. As always, they will again be at the Show on the Friday and Saturday.
