Flying Standard 16 Avon

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

Avon built coach built bodies on all manner of Standard chassis from 1929 to 1937 and this car is perhaps one of the most elegant that was made. The six-cylinder motor is coupled to a four-speed synchromesh gearbox and the 4 seaters two-tone body design is almost pillarless.

The owner is John KIssack from the West Midlands.

I have also included a couple of advertisements for the car from the contemporary press.

Please note the photo below of John Maudslay and his wife taking part in a Concours event in Torquay in a very similar car.

John was the son of Standard's founder, Reginald Maudslay and was appointed Managing Director of the New Avon Coachbuilding Company.

You will note that this particular car, a Flying 20Hp, is a Drophead Coupé, with every conceivable extra (rear wheel spats, huge headlights and no fewer than 4 horns) in the hope that the car will be competitive in this prestigious show event.

Anyway, let's get back to our subject Avon.
